KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Fourteen people drowned in a lake on the border between Zambia and Congo when the boat they were taking across sank earlier this week, Congolese lawmakers said Friday. The boat passengers died on Lake Mwero as they were leaving Chinsamba island, according to Abraham Kitanika Soriano, a member of Congo’s parliament. A 15th passenger died of a heart attack due to the stress of the incident, he said. The boat left the island Monday morning with approximately 50 people on board and encountered severe wind. Zambian authorities rescued an unknown number of survivors from the water after the vessel went down. All fourteen bodies were recovered from the lake, officials said. Boat sinkings are common in remote parts of Congo and have caused dozens of fatalities. Many watercraft are overloaded with cargo and people who don’t know how to swim. TOKYO (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida donated religious offerings on Friday to a Tokyo shrine that China and the Koreas consider a symbol of Japan’s wartime militarism.Kishida donated Shinto “masakaki” ornaments for Yasukuni Shrine’s biennial festival, as he has since becoming prime minister in October 2021. The donations are seen as a gesture toward conservative governing party lawmakers and voters. Yasukuni honors about 2.5 million Japanese war dead, including convicted war criminals. Victims of Japanese aggression during the first half of the 20th century, especially China and the Koreas, see the shrine as a symbol of Japanese militarism, and visits by lawmakers to the shrine as signs of their lack of remorse over Japan’s wartime actions.Japanese prime ministers have avoided going to the shrine while in office after a visit to Yasukuni by then Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2013 enraged China and the Koreas. However, some Cabinet members and governing party...El conservador Larry Elder anuncia su candidatura a la presidencia por el Partido Republicano

PARIS (AP) — Night sessions at this year’s French Open will begin 30 minutes earlier than last year, tournament director Amelie Mauresmo said Friday.Late finishes during last year’s matches caused problems for fans using public transport to get back home, and also meant less rest for tired players. The clay-court Grand Slam takes place at Roland Garros from May 28-June 11.The 10 night sessions are from May 29-June 7 and all will start at 8:30 p.m. on Court Philippe Chatrier — the main court. Fans can watch an interactive show starting at 8 p.m.A total of 613,586 spectators are expected to attend this year’s tournament. With its narrow and funnel-like paths, the grounds of Roland Garros are frequently congested and it is often slow to move from court to court. To reduce congestion, organizers are reducing the number of sales for the exterior courts this year by 2,000 each day. But unlike before, fans can watch players training on Chatrier from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the w...Trudeau, Macron set for Global Citizen NOW conference in NYC
