Schubert Club highlights world premiere by Barcelona-born composer Marc Migó Violinist David Brubaker and pianist Miryana Moteva on Thursday performed the world premiere of “Death and Spring,” by Barcelona-born composer Marc Migó, a work the two musicians commissioned and was also dedicated to them. It was part of the Schubert Club’s free “Courtroom Concert Series” at St. Paul’s Landmark Center, a fantastic program that often features the talents of Twin Cities musicians.Brubaker had previously encountered Migó when the Minnesota Orchestra, where Brubaker is a first violinist, commissioned a work by him as part of the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute in 2020. He said that after he and Moteva received the music for “Death and Spring” a month before the Courtroom Concert, they were part of a process to make changes to it.“There were some things in here that I didn’t feel were playable,” Brubaker admitted. That’s the beauty of working with a living composer — both of the musicians got to be part of a brand new piece come to life — even as the final ...

Thefts prompt Minnesota, 16 states to urge recall of Kia, Hyundai cars Attorneys general in Minnesota and 16 states on Thursday urged the federal government to recall millions of Kia and Hyundai cars because they are too easy to steal, a response to a sharp increase in thefts fueled by a viral social media challenge. Some Kia and Hyundai cars sold in the United States over the last decade do not have engine immobilizers, a standard feature on most cars that prevents the engine from starting unless the key is present.Videos circulating on the social media service TikTok have shown how people can start Kia and Hyundai models by using only a screwdriver and a USB cable. In Los Angeles, thefts of Hyundai and Kia cars increased by about 85% in 2022, now accounting for 20% of all car thefts in the city, according to the California attorney general’s office. These social media-inspired thefts have often ended in tragedy, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration blaming the stolen car trend for 14 reported crashes and eight deaths. Rockies beat Phillies behind Ryan Feltner, snap eight-game losing streak Take a bow Ryan Feltner, you are officially a slump buster. The Rockies’ right-hander pitched a gem Thursday night and got an early boost from C.J. Cron in the Rockies’ 5-0 victory over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The victory snapped Colorado’s eight-game losing skid, its longest losing streak since dropping nine straight from Aug. 27-Sept. 4, 2019.Feltner has good stuff. The metrics say so, as do the Rockies, even though Feltner entered Thursday’s game 0-2 with an unsightly 8.78 ERA and a track record of going off the rails the second or third time through a lineup. But the right-hander stayed solidly on track, pitching 5 2/3 scoreless innings and limiting the Phillies to three hits while fanning six and walking three.Phillies left-hander Matt Strahm baffled most of the Rockies, hence his 11 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings, but he couldn’t fool Cron with a 3-1 slider in the first inning. Cron crushed the pitch for a two-run, line-drive homer to left...
