Palestinian authorities say an explosion at a Hamas site in Gaza has killed 1 militant GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — An explosion ripped through a Hamas militant site in the central Gaza Strip on Thursday, Palestinian authorities said, killing one militant and seriously wounding another. The Gaza-based interior ministry did not reveal the cause of the blast but said it killed Ashraf Hussein, a member of Hamas’ military wing, the Qassam Brigades. The Qassam Brigades acknowledged that Hussein was killed in what the group described as an accidental explosion. There was no information about what kind of militant facility was affected in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza Strip, or about the extent of damage caused. Gaza’s Hamas rulers have a number of training sites and underground facilities used for manufacturing weapons and storing raw rocket material. Accidental explosions have been reported in the past at bomb laboratories and munitions storehouses. Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007, prompting Israel and Egypt to impose a blockade on the territory, largely to prevent...

In Japan’s neighbors, fear and frustration are shared over radioactive water release

In Japan’s neighbors, fear and frustration are shared over radioactive water release SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Seoul office worker Kim Mijeong says she intends to stop eating seafood because she deeply mistrusts the safety of Japan’s release of treated radioactive wastewater into the sea from its crippled nuclear power plant.“We should absolutely cut back on our consumption of seafood. Actually, we can’t eat it,” Kim said. “I can’t accept the Japanese plan because it’s too unilateral and is proceeding without countermeasures.”The International Atomic Energy Agency and many foreign experts already assessed the water discharge will cause negligible impact on the environment and human health. But ahead of the discharge of the wastewater starting Thursday, public fears and frustrations were being shared in its Asian neighbors, where many still bear strong resentment against Japan’s wartime aggression.China summoned Japan’s ambassador in Beijing earlier this week to register its complaints, and a government spokesperson called the discharge plan “extremely selfish ...

Hopeful signs of an economic ‘soft landing’ emerge in Jackson Hole as Fed meets with world watching JACKSON HOLE, Wyoming (AP) — At the height of the post-pandemic economic recovery, Andy Parazette’s taco shop enjoyed such a crush of business that customers sometimes had to wait an hour for a burrito. Though Parazette welcomed the sales, the influx was unsustainable. Jackson Hole, Wyoming, was absorbing a flood of visitors as Americans crowded into nearby Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks — outdoor sites seen as safe vacation spots. The uber-wealthy who owned area properties arrived, too, to ride out the pandemic. “The COVID thing was unmanageable,” Parazette said of the summers of 2020 and 2021. “I’d never seen it like that before.” Frustrated customers “were like, ‘I just wanted a burrito.’ ”This year, business is still good — just not as robust as it had been. Parazette’s costs for beef and chicken have eased after spiking the past two years. It’s not quite as hard to find workers. When he advertises a job opening, people actually ap...

Ask Amy: We already have too many wedding guests, and now there’s this problem

Ask Amy: We already have too many wedding guests, and now there’s this problem Dear Amy: I have casual friends who offered their property to host my daughter’s wedding. It is an expansive, beautiful property. We hesitantly but politely declined, as it would be too risky to plan the wedding without a tent, and a tent could not fit into the space. However, I then asked if they would be willing to allow us to have the shower at their property, and again they generously offered us exclusive use – for free.I am beyond blessed by this and I am so excited to have my daughter’s bridal shower there. My question is this: Should this couple be invited to the wedding, as a way to thank them for their generosity? We have been trying very hard to cut down the guest list, which is already over our limit. They are not close friends, and they don’t know our daughter and her fiancé. However, I feel like I am not returning the generosity. What should I do?– Want to be PoliteDear Polite: If you had accepted the couple’s offer to host the wedding at their property, it would have been po...

Louisiana Pushes Ahead With Building Carbon Pipelines in Cancer Alley

Louisiana Pushes Ahead With Building Carbon Pipelines in Cancer Alley Deep in the wooded hills above Satartia, Mississippi, on an evening after weeks of rain, a patch of soaked ground collapsed. That was all it took. With a tremendous roar, the two-foot-wide Delhi pipeline ruptured, blowing a 40-foot crater into the side of a slope. A cool fog drifted downhill from the blast site and rolled across the highway into the tiny town.Jerry Briggs, fire coordinator for neighboring Warren County, was quickly on the scene. He assumed the pipe was spewing natural gas; such pipelines crisscross the region. But as his team rushed to help the victims, what they saw didn’t make sense.People were acting like “zombies,” dazed and walking in circles or gazing back blankly as responders yelled for them to evacuate. Others convulsed, drooling, as panic-stricken family members called 911.In the end, 49 people were hospitalized. Some still have symptoms and struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder. It wasn’t until about an hour after the February 2020 explosion that the ...
