A Palestinian town with a typical population around 75,000 has been overwhelmed by hundreds of thousands of people seeking refuge as Israel expands its ground offensive across Gaza. Some of the new arrivals Wednesday at Deir al-Balah traveled by foot or rode donkey carts loaded with belongings. While many crowded onto streets around the town’s main hospital, others set up tents on sidewalks.Palestinian health officials said dozens were killed in Israel’s heavy strikes across the center and south of the territory. The U.N. humanitarian office says the scale and intensity of ground operations and fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinian armed groups in most areas of Gaza and their devastating impact is impeding aid deliveries.“Operational challenges due to insecurity, blocked roads and a scarcity of fuel are also hampering the humanitarian response,” the office, known as OCHA, said in a statement Wednesday.OCHA warned that telecommunications blackouts are making commu...

Comanche’s time was 1 day, 19 hours, 4 minutes, 49 seconds — a margin of just 51 seconds. It was the second-closest finish in Sydney to Hobart history after Condor of Bermuda beat Apollo by seven seconds in 1982.Both yachts performed several late jibe tactics as they attempted to secure the lead.“I can’t believe that result. Honestly, it is a dream come true,” LawConnect’s skipper and owner Christian Beck said. “They took the lead pretty close to the line...

LONDON (AP) — Trailing 1-0 to Everton at halftime, Manchester City didn’t much look like the newly crowned Club World Cup champion despite the new golden FIFA badge on the front of the players’ shirts. But Pep Guardiola had a simple message to his players at the break. “The manager (told us) at halftime to just keep believing, we haven’t got this badge for no reason,” City midfielder Phil Foden said. “In the second half, yeah, wow, I think we blew them away with the way we played.”Foden started the comeback by equalizing in the 53rd minute, before Julian Alvarez’s penalty and a late goal by Bernardo Silva secured a 3-1 win at Everton to put the defending champions back into the Premier League’s top four. “That’s why we’re the world champions. The best team in the world,” Guardiola said with a smile in a post-game interview on Amazon Prime. “Now I’m going to remind them every day. We have a standard to keep.” The trip to Saudi Arabia for the Club W...

PEABODY – Entering its classic Northeastern Conference matchup Wednesday night, the Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading girls hockey team was well-aware of, and driven by, the fact that Winthrop hadn’t lost a regular season game in over two years. Not anymore.Catie Kampersal’s go-ahead goal through contact in the second period was the decider in a 2-1 win over the No. 16 Vikings (3-1), capping off an exceptionally gritty effort from No. 15 PLNR (4-1) to get the monkey off its back in this matchup.Scrappy plays in its defensive zone nixed a handful of promising Winthrop chances in the final frame, adding to Alyse Mutti’s 14-save performance for a meaningful win.“This game is always circled on our calendar because we know that if you want to be competitive in the league, all roads lead through Winthrop at some point,” said PLNR head coach Michelle Roach. “We knew this was going to be ugly, it was – we were going to need to get gritty. … This is a big one.”“It’s very exciting, we were all r...

Montez Sweat has quickly fit with the Chicago Bears defense — ‘I see a hungry group here’ — and helps elevate the standards

Published Wed, 12 Feb 2025 12:23:49 GMT

The latest addition to the Montez Sweat highlight reel came in the second quarter Sunday, a disciplined pass rush on a play-action pass by Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray.Murray completed his fake to running back Michael Carter, turned back to roll right but found Sweat waiting nearby. Murray stopped and tried floating a pass to tight end Elijah Higgins. But Sweat, with all the ease of Shaquille O’Neal playing pickup hoops with elementary school kids, calmly rose and rejected the throw. In the moment, it felt almost cartoonish with how calmly and easily Sweat shut that play down. But those contributions have been coming regularly over the past two months as Sweat has helped fuel the ascent of the Chicago Bears defense.Following the team’s 27-16 win Sunday, the 27-year-old pass rusher described the collective confidence flowing through the defense. “This group has been locked in,” he said. “We’re playing really well right now. We just hav...
