Red Sox notebook: After starting year in indy ball, Barraclough relishing latest opportunity Kyle Barraclough has been pitching in the big leagues since 2015, and while he’s spent the past few years bouncing back and forth between the majors and minors he seemingly pitched well enough in his brief time with the Angels last season to warrant at least a depth role in some organization. And yet this past offseason, his phone never rang.Shut out of any big league opportunity, Barraclough signed with the High Point Rockers of the Atlantic League, an independent club based out of North Carolina. He eventually caught the eye of the Red Sox, who signed him in June and converted him to a starting pitcher, and he did so well in his new role that it became a matter of it, not when, he’d return to the big leagues.Wednesday that call, perhaps the most satisfying of his career, finally came.Barraclough was promoted to the Red Sox after a dominant stretch with Triple-A Worcester. He was added to the big league roster alongside left-hander Brandon Walter, giving Boston a pair of...

Biden claims his economic policies are reviving manufacturing, making his case at a wind farm plant By CHRIS MEGERIAN and JOSH BOAK (Associated Press)BELEN, N.M. (AP) — President Joe Biden declared Wednesday that his economic policies are reviving U.S. manufacturing as he toured the West to drum up support for his efforts on jobs and inflation in the face of voters’ doubts.“I’m not here to declare victory on the economy. We have a lot more work to do,” Biden said at Arcosa Wind Towers, a facility that once made Solo cups and other plastics but is now shifting to manufacturing wind towers. “But we have a plan. And it’s turning things around.”Arcosa, the president said, was a “great example” of how the administration’s legislative achievements have bolstered jobs and investments in the U.S. The company had to lay off workers in Illinois and Iowa before Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act became law last year, but customers placed $1.1 billion in wind tower orders with the company afterward, according to the White Ho...

Cedric Mullins expected to rejoin Orioles on Friday; fellow outfielder Aaron Hicks also close to returning | NOTES Center fielder Cedric Mullins will likely rejoin the Orioles on Friday to begin their trip out west, manager Brandon Hyde said before Wednesday’s game.Mullins is expected to play his final minor league rehabilitation assignment game Wednesday night for Double-A Bowie and be activated off the 10-day injured list Friday before Baltimore’s opening game in Seattle against the Mariners.Hyde said he will “probably” manage Mullins’ workload more closely considering he will be returning from his second IL stint with a right groin strain. The 28-year-old was also placed on the IL in late May and missed most of June before reinjuring it in mid-July.“We need him, so I’m going to try to keep him as healthy as I can,” Hyde said. After Mullins first suffered the injury, it was considered a success when the team went 11-9 without him. They did even better during his current absence, going 14-8 and from two games below the Tampa Bay Rays for first plac...

Column: How can David Ortiz want to do even more for Boston than he already has?

Column: How can David Ortiz want to do even more for Boston than he already has? In November 2013, David Ortiz finished third in Boston’s mayoral election.Don’t remember his campaign? Technically, that’s because he didn’t run for office; he finished third as a write-in candidate.Had he actually wanted to throw his hat in that ring, he probably could’ve cruised to victory, given the different kind of campaign he’d just completed. That election occurred less than two weeks after the slugger won World Series MVP and his third ring in a decade, the first Red Sox championship clinched at Fenway Park since 1918.Ortiz never became Boston’s mayor, but he’s certainly the king of the hill. The Red Sox retired his number less than a year after his final game in 2016, and inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2020. The Brookline Avenue bridge over the Mass Pike, which ferries fans to and from the Kenmore MBTA station, bears his name, as does the street across from Fenway Park’s main entrance, and Gate 34 at Logan Airpor...

Maura Healey on Wednesday, the fiscal 2024 budget includes language from a bill offered by Westfield’s Sen. John Velis and Framingham Rep. Jack Patrick Lewis called “An Act promoting equality in veterans’ bonus eligibility” which seeks to make up for a policy the Department of Defense did away with in 2011.“For far too long, thousands of courageous individuals have been told that they are not worthy of the same benefits that their comrades and counterparts earned. That their service, and their sacrifice is not worth the same.
