Man's charge lessened from capital murder after guilty plea

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man was convicted and sentenced in February after pleading guilty to a murder charge out of Williamson County related to a January 2021 fatal shooting in Round Rock.According to Williamson County records, Gage Christian Johnston pleaded guilty Feb. 17 to murder, a lesser charge than the capital murder charge he previously faced.On the same day of his guilty plea, Johnston was sentenced to serve 40 years in state prison for the death of 27-year-old Jerrionn Burleson. A driver ran off Interstate 25 in Westminster early Saturday morning, hitting a man who was sleeping in a tent off of the highway.The incident happened about 3:15 a.m. on southbound I-25 at 136th Avenue, according to the Westminster Police Department. The injured man, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.The 23-year-old driver who went of the highway was trying to avoid another vehicle, police said in a news release. He was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault DUI and was taken to the Adams County Jail.Winter weather driving conditions and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash, police said.
