Colorado advocates look to 2024 ballot to cement abortion protections, but challenge of “reversal” ban looms

Colorado abortion-rights advocates so far have succeeded in their efforts to ban a controversial experimental abortion reversal treatment, and now they’re looking ahead to next year’s ballot to further protect the right to an abortion in the state. The state’s Democratic legislative majorities have secured Colorado’s protection of abortion rights in law, but reproductive rights advocates want to cement it in the state constitution so it’s harder for future legislatures to change. The reason that prompted Colorado lawmakers to pass the 2022 abortion-rights law — the anticipated overturning of Roe v. Wade a few months later — is the same one that’s keeping hope alive among anti-abortion activists that they can reverse the tide, as more conservative states enact restrictions.Colorado’s advocacy groups have filed initial documents for a November 2024 ballot initiative aimed at codifying the right to abortion in the state constitution ...Denver has 3 of the best budget-friendly restaurants in the U.S.

As a crowd of onlookers gathered on a bike path along a nine-hole golf course in Estes Park on a brisk morning in late September, Rodney Ford peered through a magnifying scope attached to a tripod. He was focused on a magnificent bull elk that was sitting in the shade of pine trees on the ninth hole beside the Big Thompson River, surrounded by three dozen females that the herd bull was anxious to impregnate.Ford and his wife had driven from Shreveport, La., spending the night in a van parked nearby, to witness the annual drama of elk rutting season in one of Colorado’s favorite mountain towns.“I drove 16 hours just for this right here,” drawled Ford, who was situated about 100 yards from the herd. “We come here every year. This is what we do. We travel in that van, me and my wife; we go all over the United States looking at wildlife.”Fall was in the air, with scarcely a cloud in the sky, and fresh snow was visible high on the north face of Longs Peak. The violence broke out following a conference on Turkish foreign policy at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Video captured a handful of protestors chasing after the diplomats, including the Turkish Ambassador, yelling and throwing bottles at them.
