Home sales up 25% from last year, but supply remains low: Toronto real estate board

The slowdown in Toronto’s housing market continued to slip away last month as home sales came in higher than they were a year ago and prices edged closer to pandemic highs. The Toronto Regional Real Estate Board found May’s home sales amounted to 9,012, up 25 per cent from a year earlier and 20 per cent from April.Jason Mercer, TRREB’s chief market analyst, took the numbers as a sign that demand for home ownership has picked up markedly in recent months, after many prospective buyers moved to the sidelines, when interest rates were hiked eight times in a rapid succession.“Many homebuyers have recalibrated their housing needs in the face of higher borrowing costs and are moving back into the market,” he said, in a release.“In addition, strong rent growth and record population growth on the back of immigration has also supported increased home sales.”However, sellers appear to still be awaiting higher prices and have not moved to list their hom...

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — Fifteen months ago, Dev Shah spent a miserable five hours spelling outdoors in chilly, windy, damp conditions at a supersize regional competition in Orlando, Florida, only to fall short of his dream of returning to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.“Despondent is the right word,” Dev said. “I just didn’t know if I wanted to keep continuing.”Look at him now.Soft-spoken but brimming with confidence, Dev asked precise questions about obscure Greek roots, rushed through his second-to-last word and rolled to the National Spelling Bee title Thursday night.Dev, a 14-year-old from Largo, Florida, in the Tampa Bay area, first competed at the national bee in 2019, then had his spelling career interrupted. The 2020 bee was canceled because of COVID-19, and in the mostly virtual 2021 bee, he didn't make it to the in-person finals, held in his home state on ESPN's campus at Walt Disney World. Trump on reported audio discussing classified document: ‘Everything I did was ri...

Ask Amy: Is it OK to let our child use the bachelor neighbor’s pool?

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 23:38:07 GMT

Dear Amy: We live in the South, where many people have swimming pools (we don’t).We’ve known our neighbor “Ned” ever since we moved in, seven years ago. He is middle-aged and single. We’re friendly, but not close friends. He has a nice pool, and obviously this is a huge draw for our kids, who are 7 and 11.Ned has been super-nice about his pool and has let the kids know that they are welcome to use it, any time. Now that our daughter is 11, she wants to go over there by herself. Ned says that’s fine and he’ll keep an eye on her while she’s there. This doesn’t feel right, but our daughter is pressuring us, and we’re not sure what to do.– Puzzled ParentsDear Puzzled: That’s a solid “no.” You do not want your children hanging out at an adult neighbor’s house without a parent also being physically present. They should also never go to a private swimming pool without your direct supervision, and because Ned seems unable or unwilling to establish boundaries, you must. There are affordabl...
