It’s time to find out what lessons Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have learned after their crash course in Premier League soccer.Chelsea certainly came crashing down to earth in the co-owners’ first year in charge of the two-time Champions League-winning club. It felt like Boehly and Clearlake were in a hurry to get ahead of the curve in their first season at Stamford Bridge. Now they are playing catch-up after a chaotic campaign saw them spend record amounts on new signings, hire and fire managers and oversee Chelsea’s worst ever season in the Premier League. In response, Mauricio Pochettino was hired as Chelsea’s fourth manager in less than a year, while even more signings have been made to add to the $630 million Boehly and Clearlake had already spent on players since buying the club for $2.5 billion last year. A slew of big names have headed for the exit as well, with N’Golo Kante and Mason Mount most notable among them. As Commanders eye RFK Stadium, DC Council battles over bringing them home

The Washington Commanders are the closest they’ve ever been to returning to the old RFK Stadium site in D.C. — the NFL team’s home base from the days when it won three Super Bowls and captured the city’s attention each Sunday.“The energy is palpable, it doesn’t matter where you go,” At-Large D.C. Council member Kenyan McDuffie said on the DMV Download podcast. “The Commanders belong in the District of Columbia.”Three weeks ago, the Harris Group — led by D.C. native and billionaire Josh Harris — bought the Commanders from the loathed and liability-laden Dan Snyder. Two weeks ago, Congress introduced bipartisan legislation that would give D.C. the power to redevelop the RFK site. And last week, the city took the first step by launching a “DC Sports study” that will work to select a contractor “to identify and recommend deal structures for financing DC sports facilities” at si...IHeartMedia: Q2 Earnings Snapshot

(CNN) — More than 6 in 10 adults in the United States drink sugar-sweetened beverages on a daily basis. For older women, that might mean a higher risk of liver cancer and death from chronic liver disease, a new study finds. The report, published on Tuesday in the medical journal JAMA, tracked the beverage choices of nearly 100,000 women between the ages of 50 and 79 across the United States and looked at their health outcomes over two decades. Compared with women who consumed fewer sugar-sweetened beverages less frequently, those who drank sugary beverages every day faced higher rates of liver cancer and death from chronic liver disease.Throughout the study, participants reported how often they consumed sweetened soft drinks and fruit drinks on a scale from “never or less than once per month” to “6 or more per day.” Researchers also looked at the number of those women who were diagnosed with liver cancer or died from chronic liver disease across a study period of, on average, nearly ...Germany has spent €55K on Merkel’s hair and makeup since she left office

The German government has splashed out almost €55,000 on former German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s hair and makeup since she left office in 2021. Despite departing Germany’s top job almost two years ago, Merkel is still billing the federal government for several expenses, according to documents obtained by Tagesspiegel via a Freedom of Information Act request.Merkel, according to a previous Tagesspiegel report, did not retain her longtime former makeup artist, but now relies on a new self-employed hair and makeup artist, who also works as a fashion designer, based in Berlin. The chancellery pays for Merkel’s hair and makeup for both public and private engagements. So far she has racked up a €17,200 bill in 2023, in addition to a €37,780 bill in 2022.“The assumption of costs is linked to the performance of continuing official duties — regardless of whether they are public or non-public,” the German chancellery told Tagesspiegel.Rising costs of officials...Right wing set for big gains in 2024 EU election, polling shows

They were rescued by a Maltese cargo ship and taken to Lampedusa by the Italian Coast Guard, according to Italian newswire ANSA.The four survivors told the Coast Guard that 45 people had left Sfax. After about six hours of navigation, the 7-meter metal boat capsized due to a large wave and all 45 migrants ended up in the sea. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has opened an investigation after it published a spreadsheet containing the professional data of its officers and civilian workforce by mistake, a senior officer said Tuesday.“The data concerned contained the surnames and initials of current employees alongside the location and department within which they work,” Assistant Chief Constable Chris Todd said in a statement, adding that the breach “resulted from information included in error in response to a Freedom of Information Request.”“Although it was made available as a result of our own error, anyone who did access the information before it was taken down is responsible for what they do with it next. It is important that data anyone has accessed is deleted immediately,” the officer said. The data breach is particularly sensitive given members of the PSNI have been targeted by republican paramilitaries in Northern Ireland in recent months.
